Music Lesson Awards

Music Department Lesson Awards are grants presented by the Department of Music to a limited number of registered University of Chicago students to help defray the cost of private lessons in applied music. The grants are awarded on the basis of competitive auditions. They may be used to cover up to, but not more than, 60 percent of the total cost of private lessons for the 2019-2020 academic year. In recent years, the average grant has been approximately $600 and the maximum grant has been $1,100. Explicit preference is given to musicians who are active in one or more of the Department’s fifteen performance organizations. Note that singers who hold paid positions in Rockefeller Chapel Choir but are not members of any other Department ensemble are ineligible for these awards.

Also please note that auditions for Music Department Lesson Awards take place during the autumn quarter only. All funds are allocated at that time. Students who plan to take private lessons at any time during the 2019-2020 academic year should audition on November 2 if they wish to be considered for financial assistance.

The audition date for the 2019 Music Lesson Awards is Saturday, November 2, 2019. An audition sign-up sheet is available in the Music Department main office (Goodspeed 309).
