Fiona Boyd is a Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology. Her current research interests center around the history and present-day practice and reception of old-time and country music in the United States. The growing debates about authenticity and ownership in both North American traditional musics and commercial country music have spurred Fiona to investigate the intersections of race, gender, and class in these musics, as well as to engage with critical whiteness studies and ideas of nostalgia and purity.
Prior to her studies at UChicago, Fiona attended Wellesley College where she carried out fieldwork in North Carolina and Massachusetts for her thesis on the North Carolina old-time scene and the music of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. She has also worked in arts administration and is a classically trained violinist-turned-fiddler.
