Research Interests: opera, singing culture, and the voice; queer studies, gender, and racialization; the early modern Atlantic world, imperialism, the twentieth-century early music movement and its related genres

Devon has recently presented research from his dissertation at international conferences in Boston (Atlantic Crossings at the Boston University Center for Early Music Studies, June 2019) and Paris (Transnational Opera Studies Conference, June 2019). He has also presented his research at meetings of the American Musicological Society, the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music, and the Midwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society, where he received the A-R Editions Award for Most Outstanding Student Paper. A former recipient of the Eileen Southern Fund grant from the American Musicological Society’s Committee on Cultural Diversity, he later served a two-year term as the student member of the AMS’s Committee on Race & Ethnicity (2018–2019). Devon is also a recipient of the Stuart Tave Humanities Teaching Fellowship for the 2019–2020 academic year, for which he designed and will teach his own undergraduate course called Queer Singing | Queer Spaces in the Spring. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and holds two Master’s of Music degrees from The Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory in Early Music Performance (Voice) and Musicology.
